LCD Display
An LCD display, or Liquid Crystal Display, creates various colors based on white light passing through color filters. When white light passes through, it generates primary colors like red, green and blue, with the speed of light passing through each pixel controlled to manage pixel color. On an LCD screen, it's very difficult to completely block white light and display true black; there will always be some light leakage, making it challenging to render true blacks, especially in dark scenes on most displays.
OLED Display
OLED stands for Organic Light-Emitting Diodes and each pixel in an OLED display emits its own light without the need for a separate backlight or color filter. Each OLED pixel can be assigned the colors red, green and blue and some manufacturers have added yellow, but the principle remains the same.
Due to the unique properties of OLED, there's no need to cover a light source like in LCD displays. Instead, OLED pixels can be turned off completely to produce true blacks. This allows OLED displays to achieve true blacks. OLED's black colors are very deep, contrast is exceptionally high and compared to elements like white, they can create stunning results.
